Gondar
The medieval
capital of Ethiopia
Gondar
remained a centre for Culture and trade for two centuries. Founded by
Emperor Fasilidas in 1636, it is famous for its many medieval castles
and the design and decoration of its churches.
Debra Berhan Selassie, in particular, represents a masterpiece of the
contemporary school of art.

Flanked by twin mountain streams at an altitude of more than 2,300
meters, Gondar commands spectacular views over farmlands to the gleaming
waters of Lake Tana.
The city retains an atmosphere of antique charm mingled with an
impression of mystery and violence.
